UHN’s Commitment to A Healthier World
With a mission to create A Healthier World, University Health Network (UHN) is at the forefront of health care research and innovation.
Our six research institutes, supported by UHN Foundation and The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation, work together to drive excellence in scientific discovery and clinical application.
Institutes Across Disciplines Advancing Science
At Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, a team of dedicated researchers are developing new anticancer drugs and identifying drug targets, bringing life-saving therapies closer to patients.
The KITE Research Institute is a world leader in complex rehabilitation, enhancing the quality of life for those living with the effects of disability, illness, and aging through innovative research and rehabilitation strategies.
Toronto General Hospital Research Institute (TGHRI) advances therapeutic innovations, including organ transplantation, cardiac pacemakers, and novel treatments for endocrine and autoimmune disorders.
The Krembil Research Institute develops innovative treatments for chronic debilitating conditions, such as neurological, ophthalmologic, and musculoskeletal disorders.
The Institute for Education Research (TIER) is redefining health care education by developing and implementing cutting-edge educational methodologies, equipping the future health care workforce with essential skills and knowledge to enhance the quality of care for diverse patient populations.
The McEwen Stem Cell Institute is leading the charge in stem cell research, aiming to create new therapies for chronic diseases with unmet clinical needs, like blood cancers, diabetes, and heart and liver disease.
Impacting Mental Health
UHN is making significant strides in advancing mental health research through impactful initiatives across its institutes.
At KITE, researchers are exploring strategies to promote health and well-being among older adults, addressing healthy aging, mental well-being, and effective mental health interventions for issues like depression in later life. They also study gender disparities in post-stroke depressive symptoms, advocating for tailored rehabilitation approaches.
TIER focuses on the mental health of health care workers, especially during times of crisis. Their work aims to build a resilient workforce and enhance culturally safe nursing education for a more inclusive and supportive health care environment.
Krembil scientists are uncovering the links between brain structure changes and neuropsychiatric symptoms in neurodegenerative diseases. Their research on stress neurobiology and cognitive impairment in mood disorders informs new mental health treatments.
At TGHRI, researchers are assessing interventions for frontline health care workers affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and investigating digital behavioural counseling to improve the well-being and quality of life of patients with heart and kidney conditions.
Princess Margaret Cancer Centre researchers examine the biological underpinnings of psychological distress in cancer patients, developing tools to manage depression and anxiety and improve the overall quality of life for individuals with cancer.
These initiatives collectively address mental health challenges from multiple perspectives, fostering cultural sensitivity, advancing treatment options, and supporting vulnerable populations. Together, we embody UHN’s commitment to creating A Healthier World.
