Dr. Grant N. Pierce

Dr. Grant Pierce is a recipient of the Research Canada 2016 Leadership Award. Dr. Pierce is the Executive Director of Research at St Boniface Hospital and a Professor of Physiology and Pathophysiology at the University of Manitoba. Dr. Pierce’s advocacy for health research has been extensive. He organized “Hoops from the Heart,” a unique program for disadvantaged students, and assisted in creating the RBC Youth BioLab Jeunesse, an initiative to expose elementary and high school students to health research. He persuaded the University of Manitoba as well as the Federal Department of Agriculture to study the role of functional foods in preventing human diseases resulting in the establishment of the Canadian Centre for Agri-Food Research in Health and Medicine. As a principal spokesperson for research, Dr. Pierce appears regularly on a popular radio station to answer questions from the public regarding health and health research issues. Since 1986, as Scientific Secretary/Chair of several conferences, he has convinced philanthropic foundations and the private sector to provide funds to raise the profile of Manitoba health research.
