Dr. Taylor Morriseau is a recent PhD graduate who is striving to understand the molecular mechanisms underlying youth-onset type 2 diabetes at the Children’s Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba (CHRIM). As a recipient of a prestigious CIHR Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship, she studies the complex interplay between genetics, diet, and disease with a particular focus on how traditional Indigenous foods may prevent or delay type 2 diabetes development in youth. She represents her own community, Peguis First Nation in her work which is dedicated to a future where First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples have an equal right to the highest attainable standard of health. Dr. Morriseau believes in advocating for positive change beyond proving hypotheses, and brings this passion directly from the lab to Parliament Hill. She represented her federal riding in the 2017 Daughters of the Vote National Leadership Forum, provided a keynote address to the 2019 Parliamentary Health Research Caucus, and testified to the Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples at the 2019 Indigenize the Senate. Across all forums, Dr. Morriseau advocates for investments in health research, enhanced supports for women in science, improved water security in First Nations communities, and access to culturally-safe traditional foods.
