Celebrating Our Gairdners
Research Canada, in partnership with the Gairdner Foundation, will host a private luncheon in the Parliamentary restaurant on October 24, 2017 with the Parliamentary Health Research Caucus Chair, Past Chair and NDP Representative, select Parliamentarians and two of the 2017 Gairdner Awardees: Dr. Cesar Victora, Emeritus Professor, Federal University of Pelotas, Pelotas, Brazil and Dr. Antoine M. Hakim, Emeritus Professor, Neurology, University of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
Stem Cell Research Luncheon
Dr. Tim Caulfield is a Stem Cell Network investigator and internationally known for his work on stem cell tourism. He is a Canada Research Chair in Health Law and Policy, a Professor in the Faculty of Law and the School of Public Health, and Research Director of the Health Law Institute at the University of Alberta. Dr. Lauralyn McIntyre, a clinician scientist at the Ottawa Hospital, is leading a world class clinical trial on septic shock, using a novel stem cell therapy. Each year 100,000 Canadians contract septic shock. This illness can be fatal with up to 40 percent of patients dying. Unfortunately, often those who survive experience severe long-term effects. The estimated annual cost on the health care system is an estimated $4 billion. Dr. McIntyre’s phase II trial, funded by the Stem Cell Network is showing significant promise.
Drs. Caulfield and McIntyre will be keynote speakers at Research Canada’s Parliamentary Health Research Caucus Luncheon on Stem Cell Research on December 5, 2017 and will demonstrate that through stem cell research and regenerative medicine safe, reliable and effective therapies can and will be widely available in the coming decades.
Indigenous Health Research Reception
Research Canada’s Parliamentary Health Research Caucus Reception on Indigenous Health Research in Canada, held on Monday, June 5, 2017 was extremely well attended by Parliamentarians including the Honourable Carolyn Bennett, Minister of Indigenous and Northern Affairs and the Honourable Jane Philpott, Minister of Health. We were delighted to welcome Dr. Carrie Bourassa, Scientific Director of CIHR’s Institute of Aboriginal Peoples’ Health as a Guest Speaker as well as Dr. Janet McElhaney from Health Sciences North.

FINA Submission
In line with Research Canada’s mandate, we are of the view that investments in basic scientific research, as described in this year’s Fundamental Science Review, led by Dr. C. David Naylor, are critical to ensuring the long-term productivity of Canadians and Canadian businesses. In our view, we cannot have a conversation about measures to support Canadian productivity and competitiveness without recognizing the central position played by fundamental science within Canada’s innovation engine, key to Canada’s current and future economic success. Thus, in Research Canada’s 2017 submission to the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance, we will be recommending:
Increased
investment of $485 million over four years to fund investigator-led research;
Stable
funding of $300 million annually for the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI);
Enhanced
support for doctoral students, postdoctoral fellows, and research chairs;
New
support for small capital grants, as well as for the infrastructure and
equipment costs associated with federally-funded research;
Financial
support to diversify opportunities for science-based graduate students so that
they may explore, embrace and compete for non-academic careers in order to
capitalize fully on their talent and energy. Such opportunities would be
achieved through new academic programs created through formal partnerships
among universities, colleges, academic health science centres, health charities
and Canadian industries to increase graduate students’ opportunities to
participate in cooperative and internship programs.
Over the next few weeks we will be meeting with key decision makers and joining our R10 Partners and health research and health innovation advocates to make the case for this level of investment in investigator-led research. Once our submission is finalized it will be on our website www.rc-rc.ca.
