Dr. Julio Montaner (OC, OBC, MD, DSc (Hon), FRCPC, FCCP, FACP, FRSC)

Dr. Montaner is a Killam Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at UBC. He is the Director of British Columbia Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS (BC-CFE), a recipient of the Research Canada 2016 Leadership Award. Under Dr. Montaner’s leadership, the Centre advocated globally on behalf of HAART, a customized combination of different classes of medications that has transformed HIV into a manageable condition. The organization played a leading role as advisor for the 1996 Antiretroviral Therapy Guidelines published in JAMA. Due to the efforts of the Centre, BC became the first Canadian province to adopt triple drug therapy and viral load testing for all eligible patients in a publicly funded plan. Dr. Montaner is a Professor of Medicine, Chair of AIDS Research, director of Providence Health Care (PHC), and Head of the Division of AIDS in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia (UBC). He is the National Co-Director of the Canadian HIV Trials Network and Past President of the International AIDS Society (IAS). Dr. Montaner is responsible for the creation of the Division of AIDS at UBC in 2007, one of only three in the world.
